Trouble already

Well, I’m on the road. I made it as far as the tiny burg of Hulberton and was deciding whether to go on or go back a half mile to see if I could camp at an RV place I saw.

Well, the bike made up my mind for me. The seat frame broke right at the bracket where it attaches to the bike. I can ride it but it’s poking me in the butt. I could stick something in there for padding, but I think it’s just a matter of time until the other side goes.

If I was far away, I’d just camp somewhere and find a local weld shop to fix it. But since I’m so close to home, I’m going to go back to Lockport.

Postponed

I’m sending this from my phone again to make sure this still works.

I did something stupid. I went to pack my medicines for my trip and realized I only had three of one of the pills left. I had put off reordering them until after my doctors visit Tuesday and they won’t get here until next week. I called the doctor’s office and got a local refill, but that took a day and I just got it this morning. I’m spending the day repacking and trying to lighten my load. I hope to leave tomorrow. This is a pretty daunting undertaking, I’m hoping once I get underway, it will seem less so.

One day to go

How many speeds does that have?

The first question many people ask about a bicycle is “How many speeds does it have?”
How many gears?

I don’t think they realize that question really shows their ignorance about bicycles. I usually answer “Three in front and nine in back.” but what they really want to hear is “Twenty-seven.” I think in the future, I’ll just say “Infinite.”

Most bikes are driven by a gear that you turn with the pedals, connected to a gear at the back wheel by a chain. It’s a simple machine and the distance you travel when you turn the cranks – those things the pedals are attached to – depends on several things. Continue Reading…
